SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. -- For the past four years, Alene Bethel has been a mainstay in the University softball team's lineup.
"She was a DP (designated player) when she was a freshman and has caught for us the last three years," said Titans head coach Jon Schuh . And you need somebody solid behind the dish and she's been that for us."
Bethel is a two-time All-Greater Spokane League catcher. And she admits she's come a long way the past four years.
"I've gotten stronger with my arm, I've made better throws, hitting has progressed a lot - I'm hitting it a lot farther - and mentally, I've come a long ways," said Bethel.
Playing the catcher position requires a sense of leadership, which is something Bethel does in her own way.
"I'm not as vocal as probably I should be," said the senior. "But I like to lead by example, by doing the right thing."
"She shows it on the field," added Schuh. "She's not a big time talker, that's never been her M.O. (modus operandi). But she's a hard worker and I think the kids respect that too."
Bethel's success on the field and in the classroom is leading her to Southeast Missouri State next year, where she can continue her softball career.
"I'm just excited, because it's the next level. Just really excited."
"I think early on you knew she was a special player and she was going to get an opportunity to go on to the next level," said Schuh. "And so it's good to see good things happen to good kids."
