SPOKANE VALLEY -- West Valley senior Kyle Peckham is never out of his element on a baseball field. "He went from catcher back to first base, back to catcher and dh and back to first baseman." says Eagles head coach Don O'Neal. Peckham says behind the plate is where he feels most at home, but first base isn't bad either. "I like catcher just because you're the only guy facing the wrong way on the field, first base it's the most important position, I mean if no one's at first base to pick everybody's throws you're giving up base runners." Peckham played for the Eagles in state championship football game last fall, but it's the challenge of baseball that really drives him. "It's a game of failure you know, it's unlike anything else if you were to go three for ten in baseball that's a great day, but in basketball you shoot three for ten from the floor and that's not good." Peckham says. The diamond might be the only place he fails 70 percent of the time. It certainly doesn't happen in the classroom where the math enthusiast has a 4.0 GPA, impressing even his coach. "He's super smart, almost too smart but that's a good thing." "I love math, it's just a bunch of critical thinking you have to think outside the box and figure out how to solve all your equations." Peckham says. Playing two sports and holding down a perfect record in the classroom takes a lot of time management, but Peckham makes time to play the video game, Call of Duty. "We'll have a occasional zombie slaying party, we'll invite about six guys over and we'll just go to town on em." Next year Peckham will continue his baseball career at Gonzaga, where we're sure he'll find time for video games now and then.
