YAKIMA, Wash. (AP) -- Derek Dickerson scored 28 points and top-ranked Squalicum survived the record 48-point performance by Ephrata's Patrick Simon in a 77-62 semifinal victory Friday night in the Class 2A boys tournament.
Squalicum will get a chance at its second straight title on Saturday night against Burlington-Edison.
But it wasn't easy. Not with the 6-foot-9 Simon, who signed to play for Washington State next year, shattering the previous tournament record of 38 set by Wapato's Willie Blodgett in 2009. Simon hit 13 of 27 shots, including 7 of 16 3-point attempts. He hit all 15 free throw attempts.
Simon's performance pulled Ephrata back into a game that seemingly was over early in the second quarter. After the Tigers (22-3) took a 6-2 lead, Squalicum (25-1) ran off 27 straight points for a 29-6 lead just two minutes into the second quarter.
The Tigers rallied behind Simon, who scored 33 points in the second half, but could never get closer than 13.
Dickerson made 10 of 15 shots, including 8 of 12 3-pointers. Patrick Voeut and Michael Greene added 14 each, and Keith Stackhouse chipped in 11.
The Storm beat Burlington-Edison 60-49 in last year's title game.
