SPOKANE - Miguel De Los Santos of the Spokane Indians has adjusted to the change this season from relief pitcher to starter just fine, thanks, in large part, to his changeup.
"I think it's my change-up. I like it so much. So I think the changeup's my stronger pitch," said the left-hander from the Dominican Republic.
But that's just one of the weapons Miguel has used to lead the Northwest League in earned run average.
"Of course when he has his best stuff he's tough," said Indians manager Tim Hulett. "He's got a big league fastball and breaking ball and changeup."
At 22 years old, he's one of the elder statesman in the Indians' clubhouse, helping to teach his teammates how to have a good time.
"Miguel, he's a, he's a closet funny guy," said Indians relief pitcher Kevin Johnson. "So I mean he's a funny guy, though he's always joking around with us American guys. You know, that kind of thing. So it's fun. It's fun."
Added De Los Santos, "I think I am a funny guy and I make people laugh a lot. So I think, it's good. I'm good. Yeah."
It's easy to have a smile on your face when you're dominating like De Los Santos has all season long.
