SPOKANE -- The Tri-City Americans might have the best record in the WHL's Western Conference, but simply put, they can't beat the Spokane Chiefs.
For the fifth time in a row, the Chiefs beat the Americans, pulling away in the third period for the 5-2 win on Saturday night in front of a sold-out crowd fir breast cancer awareness at the Spokane Arena.
Tri-City jumped out to the lead on Patrick Holland's 15th goal of the season at 7:43 in the first period. Kyle Beach answered for the Chiefs on the power play about eight minutes later with his 48th goal of the season, then Levko Koper gave Spokane the lead for good at 19:04 with his 26th.
Mitch Wahl opened the second period with another power play goal for Spokane, making it a 3-1 game. The Americans scored to make it 3-2 before the Chiefs answered with two third period goals to win for the ninth time in their last ten games.
With the win, the Chiefs are now five points behind the Americans in the U.S. Division Standings.
