Davenport High senior Jarod Gunning is a senior is one member of the basketball team whose grad point average is almost as high as his assists per game average.
Gunning gets pretty good grades. In fact the two times he hasn't gotten an A it was an A-.
"Chemistry and I didn't participate in the group project in the marketing class ... I slacked off a little bit and it showed,” Gunning said.
Jarod is both Davenport’s valedictorian and leading guard for the Gorillas, averaging around five assists a game. For the last four years he’s been a member of the varsity squad.
"He's a very unselfish player, you know, he leads in assists every game almost. It's when he gets frustrated he doesn't play to well, but he's a thinker and he doesn't get frustrated too often," Coach Tim Zeiler said.
Last year he helped his team advance to the state championship game; this year his Gorillas are hoping to win the whole thing.
“We weren't the best AAU team when we were little, but we always had high expectations and we always told ourselves when we were seniors we would go all the way and we've had some bumps in the road this year, but we're still hoping, we're still on track," Gunning said.
Jarod knows a thing or two about accomplishing his goals; except for a few a minuses he's done alright so far.
