Ritzenhein, Flanagan Win Cross Country Titles

SPOKANE VALLEY - Dathan Ritzenhein and Shalane Flanagan won the open men's and women's races, respectively, at the USA Cross Country National Championships at Plantes Ferry Sports Stadium in Spokane Valley Saturday.

Ritzenhein, the 2005 and 2008 12km national champion, claimed his third title, crossing the finish line in 34:34, 18 seconds faster than Patrick Smyth.  Scott Bauhs finished third.

Flanagan, a two-time Olympian and bronze medalist in the 2008 Olympics, ran away from the field in the 8km women's race to finish in 25:10, a full 52 seconds ahead of Molly Huddle.  Amy Hastings was the second runner-up.

North Central grad Andrew Kimple, a freshman at Washington State, finished fourth in the men's junior race.
