Chiefs Open Fall Camp with 70 Players

SPOKANE -70 Spokane Chiefs hopefuls, including 17 returning veterans, hit the ice at the Spokane Arena Thursday for the first day of fall camp.

New head coach Don Nachbaur watched from above, as former Chiefs' captains Brandin Cote, Jon Klemm and Kevin Sawyer guided the red, white and blue teams through two ice sessions apiece.

The returning players say it was nice to be back out on the ice with their teammates.

"Oh, it's great.  I've missed it all," said 20-year-old Levko Loper.  "It was a long summer, just working out and stuff.  Just ready to get back at her."

"It's nice to see all the guys again and all the players that we saw at camps last year, the guys that called up," said fellow 20-year-old Tyler Johnson.  "It's always fun to watch the new guys coming in and, you know, it's Christmas coming early again."

The 70 players will be fighting for about 42 spots in the annual Red-White Scrimmage on Sunday at 1:00pm, which will conclude the fall camp.
