Nachbaur Looking Forward to First Camp

SPOKANE - Eight weeks after being named head coach of the Spokane Chiefs, Don Nachbaur's first official duty with the organization will take place this weekend when the team opens its annual fall camp at the Spokane Arena.  Veterans checked in on Tuesday and rookies report Wednesday before ice sessions begin on Thursday.

"I love training camp because there are always surprises," Nachbaur said.  "Those surprises are the kids who are highly motivated and work hard and it never goes unnoticed.

"It's an exciting time to sit back, see the veterans and see what they have done over the summer.  At this age, the players make huge strides in their growth and strength."

Camp will feature 70 players, including 17 veterans off last year's playoff roster, newly drafted prospects and others from the organization's 50-player protected list.

A veteran of WHL camps at two other stops, Nachbaur has expectations for his veterans here in Spokane, "They're here to make the hockey team and set an example for the younger players.  I want them to perform at a level to try and make the team.  I believe there are no givens in hockey.  You earn the right to make the team and earn the right to wear the jersey.

"For the young kids, it's a time to impress the staff and a learning experience for them and their families.  It's a great chance to learn the organization and feel comfortable about the decision to send their kids to play for the Spokane Chiefs."

"I'm excited to get going," said Chris Moulton, the Chiefs Director of Player Personnel.  "The fitness test yesterday went well with the veterans and the young guys come in today.  It's going to be great to see them and see how they've grown, what type of shape they're in and see what type of summer they have had."
