SPOKANE - Whitworth Pirates running back Adam Anderson is a two-time conference offensive player of the year and second-team all-american. But that all changed last year, when he suffered a severe ankle sprain that cost him most of the season.
"The day it happened was really rough," said the former Riverside High School star. "It was my first season ending injury in my whole football career. You know, I've missed a few games here and there, but season ending is a little bit rougher than missing a few games."
Anderson was forced to the sidelines, hoping the NCAA would grant him a medical redshirt that would allow him to return this season.
"Coming back was one of those things, not knowing if I had the year coming back was like, 'Hopefully I get it. I should get it. But if I don't get it, what am I going to do?'"
Anderson was granted a redshirt and has returned to the practice field, boosting the expectations of this year's team.
"Adam's a special player no doubt about it," said Pirates head coach John Tully. "We still don't know if he's 100-percent. We'll see here in the next couple weeks. And he's gonna work hard and we'll bring him along."
For a lot of athletes, there is a bit of anxiety returning from an injury, as they start to test what their body can do. But not for Anderson.
"I'm not really thinking about it. You know, it's a beautiful day, you're out here with a great group of guys, great coaches. Just ready to play some football and get better."
And as Anderson continues to get better, so do the postseason hopes of the Whitworth Pirates.
