Vandals AD Spears confident after WAC departures

MOSCOW -- University of Idaho Director of Athletics Rob Spear is confident about the future of the Western Athletic Conference and the University of Idaho Vandals' place in it.

"We are obviously disappointed but we feel like we positioned the University of Idaho to be in a place where were we can raise our program to the next level by being committed and staying in a newly revised Western Athletic Conference," Spear said in response to Fresno State and Nevada announcing their intentions to leave the WAC for the Mountain West Conference beginning with the 2012-13 school year.

"Behind the door of adversity, there is opportunity. I think there is tremendous opportunity for the remaining WAC members."

University of Idaho President Duane Nellis expressed like sentiments.

"The University of Idaho is disappointed to learn of the unexpected departures of Fresno State University and the University of Nevada from the Western Athletic Conference," Nellis said. "The University of Idaho remains committed to the WAC and is proud of its association with the remaining nationally recognized universities. In the coming days, we will join our WAC colleagues to explore possible additions to the conference and build upon the strong traditions of the WAC's success, both in the West and nationally."

The next step, Spear said, is to determine which schools are the best fits to reconstruct the WAC.

"We need to do the right thing in the WAC and bring the right schools in," he said. "There is tremendous opportunity for other FBS teams."
