SPOKANE – Lewis and Clark High School senior Austin Ehlo is a two-sport star for the Tigers, but he says football is his true love despite his connection to the hardwood.
Basketball might be in his blood, but it’s football that truly gets it pumping for Ehlo.
“I love making the big plays, going out there and catching balls or blocking for the running backs out there, but just making big plays,” Ehlo said.
Ehlo’s love for football is even obvious to his coach, Dave Hughes.
“Austin is a big play receiver for us, he loves football, he’s been in love with it for three years, he also plays basketball, but we’re happy he’s a football player,” Hughes said.
Coach Hughes says Austin’s dad, Washington State University great and 14-year NBA veteran Craig Ehlo, is okay with it too.
“He just says go out there, play hard, play smart, get it done, so that’s what I do,” Ehlo said.
Austin’s work ethic and his size have helped him become one of the best wide-receivers in the Greater Spokane League.
“Austin catches the ball great, that’s his greatest asset as a wide receiver, you throw anything to Austin and he’s going to catch the ball,” Hughes said.
Ehlo hopes to continue playing football in college, playing somewhere in the Northwest in 2010.
“Somewhere in the PAC-10, WSU or OSU, something like that hopefully,” Ehlo said.
Cougar fans can only hope Ehlo follows in his dad’s footsteps and comes to WSU.
