The Spokane Regional Sports Commission and Eastern Washington University have submitted a three-year bid to host the NCAA National Championship Game for college football's Championship Subdivision (FCS, or the former Division I-AA) for 2011-2013.
If awarded, the games will be played at Spokane's Joe Albi Stadium, marking the return of college football to the site that once hosted home games for EWU and Washington State University. The championship game would be played on the first Friday of January, prior to the BCS (Bowl Championship Series) Championship game.
"We see this event as an opportunity to help restore Joe Albi Stadium to the facility it once was, and to sell out one of the most prestigious NCAA national football events in Spokane," says Eric Sawyer, Executive Director of the Spokane Regional Sports Commission.
The SRSC estimates an economic impact of $4.7 million generated for the region each year. The games would be televised live on ESPN.
Chattanooga, Tennessee has hosted the FCS championship for the past ten years, and will again on December 18, 2009.
