I have a confession to make. I'm a total soccer geek.
Even though I stopped playing the sport at the age of 15, "the beautiful game" has recaptured my interest so much in recent years, that it now ranks near (but still slightly behind) basketball and football in my list of favorite sports. And having a home team to root for now in the Seattle Sounders FC certainly helps.
This morning, I came across this: Seattle's candidacy to host World Cup matches.
The United States is bidding to host the World Cup in 2018 or 2022. Seattle is one of 27 cities and Qwest Field is one of 32 stadiums vying to be included in the U.S. bid.
I have to believe that if the U.S. is picked to host the world's greatest sporting event, Seattle is a shoo-in to host matches. The immense popularity of the Sounders FC and Seattle's success in hosting international "friendlies" with the likes of FC Barcelona, Chelsea and Real Madrid has shown the Emerald City appreciates and supports world class soccer.
So why not help make it happen? Having the World Cup practically in our own backyard would be a dream come true for this soccer geek.
And since I'm dreaming already, maybe we can get Joe Albi Stadium in the mix as a host site. Okay, maybe not.
