Former Indian Greinke Wins A.L. Cy Young

SPOKANE, WA - Former Spokane Indians player and current Kansas City Royals ace Zack Greinke was named the American League Cy Young award winner after going 16-8 with a 2.16 ERA and 242 strikeouts for the Royals this season.

The right-hander was drafted by the Royals in the first-round of the 2002 MLB First-Year Player Draft, going sixth overall. Following a brief stint with the GCL Royals (Rookie), the young pitcher was promoted to Short Season Single-A Spokane, where he started two games before being promoted again to Wilmington (High-A). He has been in the Majors since 2004 and has compiled a 50-53 career record in six seasons, with a 3.73 ERA and 750 strikeouts.

Greinke won the award with 25 of 28 first-place votes and 134 points, beating the nearest runner-up Felix Hernandez of the Seattle Mariners. The award is voted on by the Baseball Writers Association of America.
