He's a star quarterback, like it or not

CUSICK, WA – Cusick High School is the top-ranked, eight-man football team in the state and their senior quarterback, Spencer Shanholtzer, has developed into one of the top quarterbacks at any level.

There are many reasons why this quarterback loves to play football, but one rises above all the rest.

“I'm a competitor, I love the competition,” Spencer said.

While Spencer has always loved the sport he didn't always want to be the quarterback.

“One of the funny things about it was, in 8th grade when I first started coaching he said:, coach, I don't want to be the quarterback,” Sonny Finley said. “Now look at where he's come and how far he's along as a quarterback.”

The stats are the proof as he's gained closed to 10,000 yards as a four-year starter. He's also thrown 62 touchdown passes in the last two seasons combined, but he gives the credit to everyone else.

“I have to give a lot of credit to my life, my offensive live is, they are big and our receivers, and both our starting receivers are 6 feet 4 inches and have great hands,” Spencer said.

Spencer's also a beast on defense. He was an all state defensive back and is now the middle linebacker for the Panthers.

“He is, all around, the leader of our team and I know he's a leader because I look to him for leadership,” Finley said.

The Panthers hope Spencer can lead them to a state title. Then it's off to college to play football – that quarterback thing hasn't turned out so bad.
