Former Cougar football player Bill Moos has signed a contract with Washington State University to become a fundraising consultant within the athletic department, according to a source close to the situation confirmed Friday night.
Moos, who served as athletic director at the University of Oregon from 1995-2007, was one of three finalists for the athletic director job at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas. But earlier this week, UNLV chose Arizona's Jim Livengood, a former WSU athletic director, instead.
Moos' hiring comes at an important time for WSU, which is looking to raise enough funds to move forward with Phase III of the Martin Stadium renovation. Moos has earned his reputation as a fundraiser. During his tenure at Oregon, he coordinated the $90 million renovation of Autzen Stadium in 2002 and spearheaded a lucrative contract with ESPN Regional.
Upon leaving Oregon, Moos signed a substantial buyout clause, forbidding him from working for another Bowl Championship Series conference school. However, Moos' new position at WSU will not violate this clause, since his role is purely as a consultant.
The new position is not believed to be a threat to current WSU athletic director Jim Sterk, who has served in that role since June of 2000.
