COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho -- Coeur d'Alene High School senior Dayna Drager loves the game of basketball.
"The intensity, it's not like pure running, it's very diverse and the teammates, it's just great," said Drager. As far as first impressions are concerned, Drager might come across as a shy person, that is unless you meet her on the basketball court. "Last year she was our leading rebounder even though we had a couple kids at 6-foot-3, she was still our leading rebounder from the guard spot," said Coeur d'Alene coach Dale Poffenroth. "I just try to attack the basket a lot, I like attacking instead of just being our front I guess," Drager said. Drager takes her aggressive attitude wherever she goes - into cross country, track, and the classroom. "You could leave her and say we're going to be gone for a couple of minutes, you come back and she'll be doing her homework, or come to you and say, 'I need to tutor somebody because someone needs help with their grades'," said Poffenroth. "You have to balance your time, you have to put homework first," said Drager. "I try to put basketball and family and just incorporate it all." Poffenroth's team won the state title a year ago, and if they want to get back there this season a lot will fall on Drager's shoulders. "She's got to keep all the kids together because we have five freshmen and sophomores in that group of ten, and she's got to keep them all focused on where we are headed," said Poffenroth. "I just try to focus on showing them in practice what work needs to be done, like what hard work, how you need to go about practice, acting like it's a game harder than a game," said Drager. Drager's hard work has paid off in all aspects of her time as a Viking. She hopes that it will pay off one more time with another state title.
